Calories Count
Yes, it does matter how many calories you consume in a day and over the course of a week. Here's why…It's basic math. For you to gain 1 pound, your body needs to store 3500 calories more than it uses over a period of time. Likewise, if you use 3500 calories more than you take in, you will lose 1 pound. Here is a quick formula to help you determine how many calories per pound you need to intake to maintain your current body weight.
Decide if your activity level is:
Low = 12
No exercise and sedentary lifestyle
Moderate= 14 Exercise 3 days a week with a moderately active lifestyle.
High= 16
Exercises 4 or more days a week and leads an active life
Now, multiply the number that corresponds to your activity level by your current weight. The answer is the total number of calories you need each day to maintain your current weight.
Trying to lose weight? Follow these guideline when crunching calorie numbers.
1. Do not lower caloric intake less than 1500 per day or your metabolism may become so slow that your body will work harder to store calories.
2. Expend 300 - 500 calories a day through exercise.
3. Decrease caloric intake no more than 500 - 750 calories below what is necessary to maintain your current weight, then adjust that number as you lose weight.
4. A healthy weight loss is 2 pounds a week…No more!
