Chronium Picolinate
The Truth Revealed

By: Joseph. P. Cannon, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT

Chronium first came to the public eye in the early 1990's when we were told that "scientific evidence" proved that chromium burned off excess body fat while building muscle. While chromium helps the body use sugar more effectively the preponderance of scientific studies to date show that chromium dietary supplements do not promote body fat loss or muscle gain in healthy individuals.

Chromium, like all dietary supplements, are not without possible side effects. Chromium Picolinate is the most popular form of chromium on the market today. Chromium Picolinate has been studied extensively and has not been found to enhance fat loss or muscle gain in humans. In fact, one study found that young, overweight women who took Chromium Picolinate actually gained weight!

Other studies indicate that Chromium Picolinate may result in genetic mutations, which theoretically might result in diseases such as cancer. This is an ongoing area of research and human studies have not been conducted on this possible outcome of chromium use.

Still, in spite of the growing body of human evidence showing that chromium does not promote weight loss in humans, one has to wonder why it is still incorporated into the majority of over the counter weight loss products.
